Grand Rapids Morning Telegram, Grand Rapids Telegram HeraldThe Grand Rapids Morning Telegram was founded by William M. Harford and Hugh McDowell and published its first issue on September 23rd, 1884. A competing telegram, Breeze's Herald, was founded on May 20th, 1885 by Lloyd Breeze, and on April 17th, 1886 he and Fred G. Berger purchased the Grand Rapids Morning Telegram, consolidating the two papers to become the Grand Rapids Telegram Herald. By 1888, the name was changed to the Grand Rapids Herald.
The Grand Rapids Herald had three locations during its operation. It first had offices in the Metropolitan Building on Pearl Street until 1888. It then moved to Pearl Street and Campau where it established the city's first typesetting foundry. After the 1904 flood, the Herald moved to an area near Sheldon Avenue and Fulton and in 1914 a building was constructed on Fulton next to the Grand Rapids Press.
The Herald was purchased by the Grand Rapids Press on April 1st, 1958, and the final edition of the paper was published on March 29th, 1959. On April 5th, 1959, the Grand Rapids Press began published a Sunday edition, becoming a daily paper.
