Curious to explore how cameras and photography have evolved over time? Browse this artifact collection!

The idea for this Collection came from Matilda, a fourth grade student at Explorer Elementary in Kentwood Public Schools. As a part of a school research project on innovations, Sadie gathered information and materials on the essential question: How have innovations changed the way that humans take pictures?

Matilda wanted to study film, polaroids, digital cameras and more.

What do YOU think has changed the ways humans take pictures?

Objects have power. They illustrate the ingenuity and skill of the people who made them, and remind us that we too can create beautiful and useful things. They connect us across time and space and demonstrate how our basic human needs, to eat and drink, to be safe and sheltered, and to communicate with each other, really aren't any different than those of our ancestors who may have lived a long time ago and far away. Objects tell stories. They are an anchor that keeps our collective memory from drifting too far from the truth. Objects are fragile and rarely speak for themselves. Museums like ours preserve and interpret objects to give them meaning for our time and place, and to ensure that future generations can do the same.

During a time of great uncertainty, these objects from the Grand Rapids Public Museum's collection, and the stories they tell, inspire me, make me smile, and give me hope.

GR HERstory (16 items)
Created by: Katie
This is a history of Grand Rapids, told through the women that created, fashioned, and fought for it, since the 1700s. It is a story of humanity, passion, and community, that still exists today. This is our story as we pack a "suitcase of dreams" and enter tomorrow with courage and hope. May we not only learn from HERstory but make it ourselves!

Innovations in Recording Information (33 items)
Created by: Erin
The idea for this Collection came from Sadie, a fourth grade student at Explorer Elementary in Kentwood Public Schools. As a part of a school research project on innovations, Sadie gathered information and materials on the essential question: How have innovations changed the way humans record information?

Sadie wanted to study ancient writing like hieroglyphics, writing on paper and typing.

Reflect:

- How are these different forms of writing and recording information similar? How are they different?

- What do you think are the most influential innovations that have changed the ways humans record information?
