This black hat is made of straw and horsehair. The large crown is heavily decorated with gray net and there is a large rhinestone embellishment on the front of the crown. This hat also has an interior stamp that reads "Corl, Knott, Co. LTD., Grand Rapids, Mich.". This hat is also accompanied by a black velvet band. It is unknown what the band is for.Date:

Corl, Knott & Co. was established in 1890 when Samuel Corl and Herbert Knott formed a partnership to start a millinery in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Corl was the President of the company and Knott was the Vice-President and Treasurer. The business was originally located at 75 Monroe Street in Grand Rapids but was moved to 20-22 North Division Street in 1891. The company relocated again in 1912 to Commerce Avenue. Evelyn Leonard Avery was born in 1883 to Frank E. Leonard and Sarah P. Pierce. She married Noyes L. Avery Sr. in 1907 and together they had two children, Noyes Jr. and Elisabeth. She passed away in 1972. Dr. Noyes Latham Avery Jr. (donor)
Dr. Noyes Latham Avery Jr. was born on May 31st, 1909 to Dr. Noyes L. Avery Sr. and Evelyn Leonard Avery. He married Ann Edmunds in 1942 and passed away on December 8th, 1996.
