LEGO Model, Grand Rapids Public Museum's Van Andel Museum Center
Identifier:
2014.41.1
Description:
A model of the Grand Rapids Public Museum’s Van Andel Museum Center made in LEGO bricks. The model was originally purchased for the LEGO exhibit "Dream It, Build It" (2013) from LEGO Certified Professional Adam Reed Tucker who built it as an homage to the Van Andel Museum Center's architecture.
The design of the Van Andel Museum Center reflects the architectural heritage of West Michigan. The exterior bands of burnt orange and red brick against creme was a common motif in 19th-century Grand Rapids and also references the building traditions of Dutch immigrants. The building is 94 ft (5 stories) and was designed by architect was E. Verner Johnson & Associates then built from 1993-1994.
The Museum’s design also takes advantage of its riverfront location, the changing light reflected from the water and the view to and from the heart of the city across the open expanse. During the day huge windows frame spectacular views, and at night the Museum’s key treasures: the carousel, City Hall clock and whale are illuminated from within.
