Description:
This red fez is made of felt and has a black tassel on the top. The word Saladin is stitched onto the front of the fez. The Shriners emblem can also be seen on the front. There is an interior patch that reads "Ilhing Bros. Everard Co., Masonic Outfitters, Kalamazoo, Mich." and the name W.F. Blake is written inside. This fez was stored in a red bag with a stamp from Ilhing Bros. Everard Company. 

This fez would have been worn by a member of the Ancient Arabic Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine, also known as the Shriners. The name Saladin is the local group that was based out of Grand Rapids, Michigan. The Shriners started in 1870 and act similar to a fraternity, focusing on fun, Masonic principles, and raising money for Shriner's Hospitals.

Ihling Brothers Everard Company was founded in 1869 by Otto Ihling in Kalamazoo, Michigan. It specializes in Masonic and fraternal regalia. By 1871 there were three men in the partnership: Otto Ihling, W. J. Chaplin, and Reinhold Ihling. They created blank books, ledgers, and published "The Michigan Freemason". In 1879 Herbert Everard also joined the company. The company supplied many places with their stationary such as the Michigan House of Representative and the Michigan Senate. In 1995 the company was bought by James Bellinger who renamed it Kalamazoo Regalia. He owned the company until he retired in 2007. It 2011 the company merged with Kalamazoo Sportswear and became Kalamazoo Sportswear and Regalia. As of 2017, it is still in business.  William Blake Kutche (donor) William Frederick Blake (used by)
William Frederick Blake was born in 1851 in Farmington Hills, Maine. Around 1900 he moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan and in 1912 he joined the Knights Templar. He was also a member of the Saladin Shriners of Grand Rapids. Blake passed away in 1915.
