Description:
Archival Collection #058 - George L. And Esther Young Collection was compiled by George L. Young and was left in his home and later gifted to the Museum by a couple who discovered it. Young was born and raised in Hopkins, Allegan County, Michigan. He worked as a clerk at Bishop Furniture Co. in Grand Rapids in 1911 and as its secretary from 1912-1917. He entered the army at Camp Custer near Battle Creek in 1917. After World War I, he returned to Bishop and married Esther Blickley. In 1923, they are listed in the City Directories as the President and Treasurer of Bishop Furniture. This includes a journal of activities while stationed at Camp Custer in Battle Creek during World War I. Most of the photos and booklets in the collection also relate to Mr. Young's period of active duty in the army. This important collection was created by a Grand Rapids man, and serves as a record of his daily activities while stationed at a nearby camp during WWI offering a unique account of the life of an American soldier.
