Identifier:

Description:
Color photographic print shows the skyline of Manhattan featuring the tall twin towers of the World Trade Center in background and an American flag at half-staff in the foreground.;This photograph follows in the long tradition of creating mememtoes of tradgedies that effect the lives of US citizens. Similar type items have been made to commemorate Lincoln's assisnation and the sinking of the Maine. The photograph captures the twin towers of the World Trade Center before the were destroyed by terrorists flying airplanes into them on Sept. 11, 2001. The presence of the half-mast US flag, not related to the Sept. 11 events, adds a poignancy to the picture and makes it a historical reminder of the event. May be used in "U is for USA" exhibit.;Signature in gold market on right lower corner: Ed Van Dongen and the copyright symbol and 2001 in gold marker in lower left corner.;This photograph was take by the donor while on a trip to New York City on June 29,2000. About 9:15 am he was approaching Liberty Island on a ferry when he noticed that the American flag was at half-mast. Since he had not noticed any other flags in Manhattan at half-mast he took this picture. Once on the island he found out from a Park Ranger that Park Service employees had been killed in an air crash in Alaska and that the flag would return to full staff at the end of the month. After the bombings of Sept 11, 2001, he remembered the photo and decided to it would act as a good remeberance of the events that happened.
