Description:

This tall fancy basket is made of ash splints and has large hoop-like handles extending upward. The pedestal base is formed of splints worked in the porcupine stitch. There is curlicue work in periwinkle stitch on the sides. This was possibly intended to be used as a flower vase. It may have been made by Potawatomi Native Americans near Battle Creek, Michigan.

Blanche Ellis served as an elementary schoolteacher for over 30 years, many of those in the Grand Rapids area. She passed away in 1957 at the age of 73.
