Description:
Large coolamon made from curved hardwood with burned stripes and geometric designs on its exterior. The interior ends are also somewhat darkened. A similar example found can be found in "Art of the First Australians," page 30, #169.;Coolamons are a general class of carrying dishes that have many uses among Aboriginal peoples. Various sizes and types are used for carrying water, fruit, winnowing grasses and seed, and even as infant cradles. The decorations on such pieces are most often produced by pressing a red-hot wire to the wood.
