Description:
John Yates enlisted in Albion Michigan in August 1861 as a Captain of Co. A. 1st Michigan Engineers & Mechanics. He was promoted to Major of the Regiment in May 1863 and became Colonel 11/3/1864 after Colonel Innes left the regiment. Yates served until September 1865 and mustered out in Nashville Tennessee with the rest of the regiment. He is pictured here in March of 1863 in his Major's uniform.
