Description:
John McCrath enlisted 9/12/1861 in Grand Rapids MI. as a 2nd Lt. in CO. B. of the 1st Michigan Engineers & Mechanics. He served until 9/22/1865 receiving promotions to 1st LT. and then Captain in November 1863. After the war he returned to Grand Rapids also living for a time in Atlanta. He served as city commisioner in Grand Rapids post war. He was responsible for collecting a large archive of material on the 1st Michigan Engineers Regiment most of which was donated to this institution by a decendant.
