Description:
Hess was born in New York and enlisted in the 1st Michigan Engineers & Mechanics in Grand Rapids where he then resided on 9/12/1861 as a 2nd Lieutenant. He served with Company D untill he resigned and was discharged for disability 7/13/1863. He lived in Grand Rapids after the war and was active in the Custer Post of the G,A.R.
