Identifier:
204051
Description:
Originally made as a Model of 1798 for the new U.S. military. Designed after the French Charleville musket by Eli Whitney, inventor of the cotton gin. Whitney manufactured 10,000 new muskets for the military. This example has had its stock cut down. The stock of this example features numerous embellishments such as brass tacks and carved brass plates that appear to be of indigenous peoples origin. It is possible this example belonged to an indigenous person who captured it but that has not been documented. Lock plate is marked "U.S./E. WHITNEY" and "NEW HAVEN/1838".
