This example is unmarked but was likely made by one of the many small gunmakers in the United States during the mid 1800s. The barrel is a heavy half octagon design. The stock features a cheek rest on the right side of the buttstock, likely indicating this rifle was custom made for someone who was a left handed shooter. The stock also features a number of brass embellishments. There is a goose in flight inlet into the cheek rest a fox inlet into the left side of the buttstock among many others. The rifle has an ornate trigger guard and a double set trigger. The set trigger would be pulled until the user heard a click indicating the front trigger had been set, this resulted in a very light trigger pull resulting in a higher degree of accuracy while firing.
