Description:

Manufactures by Christian Sharps and William Hankins in the mid to late 1850s. There were only approximately 700 of these navy rifles produced. There was a trial held by the Navy in 1861 and just ten days later they were ordered for use by the Navy. Approximately 500 were delivered to the Navy by 1862  Often these would be issued to gun crews on gun boats, sailors who were guarding posts or on patrol, or even Marine units. These rifles fire a metallic .52 caliber cartridge and operate via a lever that when actuated slides the barrel forward allowing a cartridge to be loaded into the chamber. Left side of the receiver is marked “SHARPS /PATENT/1858”. Right side of the receiver is marked “SHARPS/&/HANKINS/PHILADA”.

The University of Michigan was founded in 1817 in Detroit, Michigan. In 1837 the university moved to Ann Arbor and the first classes were held in 1841. The first commencement was held in 1845 with 11 graduates. In 1870 women began to be admitted to the university and they began to include studies such as architecture, engineering, and medicine. The university continued to grow and build more facilities including the College of Engineering in 1920. By 1950, enrollment had risen to 21,000 students. 

The University of Michigan is the oldest university in Michigan and is one of the top research universities in the United States.
