Manufactures by Christian Sharps and William Hankins in the mid to late 1850s. There were only approximately 700 of these navy rifles produced. There was a trial held by the Navy in 1861 and just ten days later they were ordered for use by the Navy. Approximately 500 were delivered to the Navy by 1862 Often these would be issued to gun crews on gun boats, sailors who were guarding posts or on patrol, or even Marine units. These rifles fire a metallic .52 caliber cartridge and operate via a lever that when actuated slides the barrel forward allowing a cartridge to be loaded into the chamber. Left side of the receiver is marked “SHARPS /PATENT/1858”. Right side of the receiver is marked “SHARPS/&/HANKINS/PHILADA”.
