Firearms ➔ Japanese Type 13 Murata Bolt Action Rifle

Identifier:
144878
Description:

Designed by Japanese firearms designer Tsuneyoshi Murata. The Type 13 was Japan's first domestically produced military rifle. It was formally adopted in the 13th year of the rule of the Meiji Emperor (1880), hence the designation Type 13. The type 13 was a single shot rifle and fired the 11mm Murata cartridge, also known as 11x60mm Murata. The bolt was a simple design and utilized the same leaf spring mechanism to cock the bolt as the Dutch Model 1871 Beaumont rifle, as the designer had seen when he traveled to Europe. This example still retains its Chrysanthemum on the receiver, most had been either defaced as a sign the rifles were withdrawn from service or were ground off before surrender. The stock cartouche is faint but still visible on the right side of the buttstock.
