Identifier:

Description:
This silk wedding dress features darts in the bodice, dropped shoulder seams, and pagoda sleeves with an inner sleeve of lace that can be seen at the cuffs. A scalloped applique is used on the sleeves, wrists, waistline, and down the center front of the dress. This dress was likely worn during mourning. Features that indicate this dress is of the 1850s are the bell silhouette, the use of a caged crinoline, and the pagoda sleeves.

The information that accompanies this wedding dress states it was worn by the donor's great-grandmother Mary Elizabeth Barrett when she married Denton E. Shuart in Honeoye Falls, New York on September 18th, 1837. Shuart was an attorney and lived in New York his entire life. It's possible that this dress was refashioned in the 1850s.

This wedding dress is accompanied by wedding hat number 1987.101.2, wedding shoes number 1987.101.3, and wedding parasol number 1987.101.4.
