Description:
Pieced signature quilt has a 13 1/2" center square set on point. The square has a Mariner's Compass pattern in the center made of gold, black, purple and green cotton on a light gold print background. In its center the words "WMQG 1977-2007" are machine embroidered in the center in green. There are thirty-five 6 3/4" signature blocks set-on point surrounding the center square. Most are variations of a nine patch and are made of purple, green, fushia, gold and cream cotton batiks and prints. There are two rows of sashing; a 1 1/2" wide gold print and a 3 1/2" wide purple striped cotton. Additional blocks set on point create the border. The edging is the same purple stripe as the sashing. Mutlicolored machine quilting in various patterns is overall the surface. The reverse in a whole cloth made of a very colorful, print with purple, pink and green stylized flowers on a red background. A hanging sleeve of this same fabric is sewn along the entire top edge./There is a scrapbook related to theis quilt stored in the W.M.Q.G. Archival Collection.;This quilt was made by members of the West Michigan Quilter's Guild to celebrate the Guild's 30th anniversary. It was made to be presented to the Museum as a commemorative piece. Members made variations of 6 3/4" square nine patch blocks and signed them. The blocks were then assembled and the entire piece was machine quilt in multicolored thread by member Nancy Roelfsema. A list of the signed names was prepared by the Guild and is in the accession file. This quilt represents over 20 years of collaboration between the Guild and the Museum. The use of printed batiks in this quilt is indicative of the popularity of that style fabric in quilting during the late 2000s.;The signatures of members of the WMQG are written on the thirty-five 6" blocks.
