Description:
This 1937 American LaFrance Fire Engine was originally purchased by the City of Grand Rapids on October 16th, 1937 for $13,039.  It was based at the Grand Rapids Fire Department's Engine House Number 6 on Grandville Avenue from 1937 through 1963.  For another 10 years it served as a reserve engine at Engine House Number 2 on Kalamazoo Avenue.  It was retired from active service in 1973 after 36 years of firefighting.

During its 26 years as a front-line machine, this engine pumped at many major fires in Grand Rapids, including: 10-30-38 McInerney Spring and Wire Company at Jefferson and Cottage Grove; 11-24-43 Berkey and Gay Furniture Company at Michigan and Monroe; 12-25-47 YMCA Hotel at C&O RR yards on Freeman; 5-13-49 Nichols & Cox Lumber Co. at Godrey SW; 2-10-53 Central Reformed Church at Fountain & Barclay; 7-1-54 Bixby Office Furniture Co. at Louis & Ottawa; 10-1-56 American Excelsior Corp at Hall & Godfrey; 2-19-57 Wagemaker Boat Co. at Godfrey & Chestnut; 10-17-57 Hooker Glasss & Paint Co. at S. Division; 1-10-60 Shelden Annex Apts at Sheldon & Oakes; 5-30-61 American Excelsior Corp at Hall & Godfrey; 3-15-63 Bursma Radio Supply Co at 870 Grandville and 5-5 -63 Erdmans Publishing Co. at Jefferson & Maple.

The Fire Engine is an American LaFrance 400 Series with Serial # 312-A-1283.  It features a V-12 engine and a pumping capacity of 1250 gallons of water per minute. The fuel tank's capacity is 30 gallons, the oil capacity is 7 gallons, and the radiator capacity is 24 gallons. In addition, the engine can carry 100 gallons of water in its booster tank.
