Sumner Merrill Well, Jr. was born in 1889 to Sumner Merrill Wells, Sr. and Sarah Althea Stephenson Wells. He graduated from Central High School in 1907 and the University of Chicago in 1912. He then graduated from Rush Medical School in 1914 and did his internship at the Children’s Memorial and Presbyterian Hospitals in Chicago. During World War I Wells served in the Red Cross Hospital Unit Q which was created by the Grand Rapids Chapter of the Red Cross. In 1917, he was commissioned as a first lieutenant and March of 1919 he was promoted to Captain. He was discharged in April of 1919 and returned home to Grand Rapids, Michigan. In 1936 he married Minerva Ford. Sumner Merrill Wells, Jr. passed away in 1966. United States Army (is related to)
