World War I ➔ Military Helmet

Identifier:
115190
Description:

This artillery combat helmet, also known as the Adrian helmet is from the French Army of the French Armed Forces. It was worn during World War I.

This combat helmet is made of steel and features crossed cannons behind a flaming grenade on the center front which is the artillery insignia. The initials RF which stand for Republique Francaise or the French Second Republic are inside the grenade.

The M15 Adrian helmet was the first standard helmet of the French Army and was designed when millions of French troops were engaged in trench warfare and head wounds became a frequent cause of battlefield casualties. Introduced in 1915, it was the first modern steel helmet and it served as the basic helmet of many armies well into the 1930s. Initially issued to infantry soldiers, they were later modified so they could also be issued to cavalry and tank crews. A subsequent version, the M26, was used during World War II.
