Description:
Clay figure (one sided mold, such pieces were made in monasteries). Buddha sitting cross-legged with one hand in his lap and one hand over his knee. Inside the figure are Tibetan prayers.;This alter Buddha, from the Black Buddhist Temple was obtained by Edward Barrett in 1925. Possibly dates from the Ming Dynasty but thought by Barrett to be made 1875--1925 C. Donor identified the Sanskrit writing on the upper portion of the object as the prayer "Jewel of the Lotus." Such pieces were created and used by Monks. See accession file #113344 for additional information. Obtained by Edward Barrett in 1925 from a temple in Northern China. The object was purchased from Barrett for $3.00 in the year 1927.;This figurine is of Sakya Muni (Gautama Buddha), the Enlightened One, and is from the Black Buddhist Temple north of Peijing, China.
