Identifier:
127611
Description:
This bonnet woven of straw features black ribbon ties and navy and cream ribbon above the brim.  Outdoor bonnets were popular during this time period because they helped protect a woman's skin from the sun, leaving her complexion fashionably pale. Middle-class women often owned at least two bonnets: one usually made of straw for warmer weather and one made of heavier fabric for colder weather. This bonnet is an excellent example of what style of hat women wore during the summer in this time period.
