Description:

This is wood propeller dates between 1920-1949. The company Flottorp Manufacturing Company produced the propellers in Grand Rapids Michigan. This article Aerial Age Weekly from December 31, 1917 Volume 6 page 689 briefly describes the early years of the company.: "By the installation of new machinery and the employment of 300 cabinet makers and wood-workers, the Flottorp Mfg. Co. of Grand Rapids Mich. is now fully equipped to start production of aeroplane propellers. The Chicago plant is still being used, but later all the manufacturing will be concentrated in the Nelson-Matter building in Grand Rapids."

The Flottorp Manufacturing Company was founded in Chicago, Illinois by Ole Flottorp in 1912. The company manufactured nearly 175 models of fixed and controllable pitch wood propellers and was contracted by the United States Government during World War I to make airplane propellers. In 1917, Flottorp opened a production site in Grand Rapids, Michigan on the first and second floors of the Nelson Matter Furniture Company warehouse located at Lyon Street and produced propellers for the government until 1921. The company was acquired by the Univair Aircraft Corporation of Aurora, Colorado in the later 1950s.
