Description:
This is a northern Alaskan kayak with a double-bladed paddle. It has a pointed and slightly upcurved bow; stern pointed with long forward slope at the bottom; hatch set at angle with covered deck rising to forward edge. 

This was collected by Captain Michael Augustine Healy (September 22, 1839 – August 30, 1904) in Cape Prince of Wales, Alaska, 1888. According to several online sources, Captain Healy is recognized as the first man of African-American descent to command a ship of the United States government.
