Description:
This style of a wooden gear wall clock was developed for the World's Fair in 1892 and was known as the Columbus Clock as the Fair took place 400 years after 1492.
This clock only has one hand. Early clocks until about 1680 only had one hand as a second hand was not needed as people only used the clock for a rough idea of what time it was.
This clock resembles the reproduction clocks made by Horolovar Company in the 1970s. Horolovar was a company from Bronxville, NY that specialized in making parts and repair guides for anniversary (400 day) clocks. They also contracted with several companies in West Germany to make a series of reproduction novelty clocks starting in the late 1950s, eventually including the Anno 1492 clock. Horolovar still exists as of 2023 making anniversary clock parts in Lancaster, Ohio under different ownership but they no longer produce novelty clocks.
