Identifier:
1983.34.1
Description:
This straw hat features a velvet bow around the crown and a cotton interior lining. During the early 20th century hats were large in size and featured elaborate decorations such as artificial flowers, feathers, and ribbons. Hats with turned-up brims became popular as well as the toque hat, picture hats, and hats that emphasized height. This hat was most likely worn during the summer months to keep the wearer cool. The wide brim would have protected a woman's complexion. It lacks embellishments and decorations which suggest it was not worn for special occasions.
