Samplers ➔ Sampler

Identifier:
176422
Description:
This piece is an example of an alphabet and verse sampler. It was started by a woman named Polly Ritter and finished by a woman with initials K.G. Overall it was stitched using a silk twist thread on a natural linen. This has been worked over with two threads of linen ground and a 1 thread verse. It contains various border patterns which can seen between each line of the alphabet and texts. There are dates attached to each portion that was created by each woman. Polly Ritter worked on the piece in 1786 and K.G. finished it in 1880. The collaboration demonstrations different styles and scripts that can be used in embroidery and how they have changed overtime. Stitched onto the piece is a death date which could imply that this sampler is also in memory of someone that had passed. K.G most likely finished this piece in the memory of Polly.
