The United States Air Force Academy, also known as the USAFA, is a military academy for officer cadets of the United States Air Force. The USAFA was officially established and signed into law by Congress and President Eisenhower on April 1st, 1954. On October 7th, 1975, President Gerald R. Ford signed legislation authorizing women to enter the USAFA. The program is the youngest of five U.S. service academies and third in seniority. The competitive four-year program specializes in educating and training determined men and women to become second lieutenants for the United States Air Force, upon graduating with a Bachelors of Science Degree in the program. The rigorous nature of the program provides cadets with a basis for future officership through military training, academics, athletics and character development. In addition, all cadets also study an extensive core curriculum in engineering, social sciences, basic sciences, and humanities. The USAFA offers both free tuition and room and board to each enrolling officer, committing to the evolution of their advancement in academic excellence and success throughout the entirety of their career in the Air Force. Today the USAFA continues to recruit about 1,200 cadets each year, guiding them to succeed through their core values of "Integrity First, Service Before Self, and Excellence in All We Do".  Gary L.
