The Union Army was a section of the United States Army that fought during the Civil War to preserve the Union of the collective states. It was made up of members of the United States Army and also units of volunteers and those drafted for service. Throughout the war, over 2 million men enlisted in the Union Army and roughly a quarter of them were killed, wounded, or went missing. In 1865, the Union Army won the Civil War when General Robert E. Lee surrendered to General Ulysses S. Grant.
