Description:
Triangular piece of wood with rounded edges.;Accession Card reads: Paper knife from Winchester Cathedral. Built of wood cut from Epping forest. Cathedral was build in the of Richard the Lion Hearted. The monks had difficulty in finding timber to use so the made an appeal to the king which was refused. Later after much urging by the Abbott of the moastery the king consented to one days cutting in the forest so the monks gathered together al of the laborers in teh city with their knives, axes and scythes. In one day they cut enough to construct the cathedral and almost stripped the forest. Wood dated 1086.;WINCHESTER CATHEDRAL NAVE ROOF OAK 1086 - - 1896 |
