Description:
Wooden carrier, when intact is shaped like a simple chair without the two front legs. The carrier is worn with "the chair-like back part resting down the man's back, and when he stoops down to raise the load, the carrier is resting on the two legs. Once he straightens up he is allright, but sometimes it is difficult to get up once he has the carrier heavily loaded. There is a sort of 'prop' that is used with it, to prop up the front part when the carrier is resting on the ground, and the man uses this prop as a cane also as he trudges along.";See accession file # 113347. Wooden carriers were in common use to carry heavy loads (up to two hundred pounds) of an array of things including wardrobe trunks, animals, and humans.;See accession file #113347. Obtained by Edward Barrett in 1925 while he was in Seoul (Keijo), the Capital of Korea. The object was purchased from Barrett for $20.00 in the year 1927.
