Description:

This scrimshaw powder horn was made on September 30th, 1759 during the Seven Years' War and belonged to Jotham Bemus of Stillwater, New York. It features an engraved map of the New York area including New York, Albany, Scorticook, and Fort Hunter with images of buildings, ships, and rivers. This horn also depicts the United Kingdom coat of arms and an engraved message that reads “Powder and Ball Will Even All | Bemus | His Horn Made Sep The 30th 1759”. Although Bemus fought in the French and Indian War, his loyalties were questioned when he refused to join the Patriot militia during the American Revolutionary War. He was imprisoned and his home and land were transformed into a fortified defensive line where much of the battle of Bemis Heights took place.

This powder horn was donated by the Peter C. and Emajean Cook Foundation, an organization established in 1987 to ensure the philanthropic legacy of Peter and Emajean Cook would live on.

The Peter C. and Emajean Cook Foundation was established in 1987 to ensure the philanthropic legacy of Peter and Emajean Cook would live on. It was the successor of the Cook Charitable Foundation and by the Peter C. and Emajean Cook Charitable Trust. Peter and Emajean were strong believers in using their wealth to provide financial and leadership support to church and community organizations. One notable project aided by the Cook Foundation is the Cook Carousel Pavilion at the Grand Rapids Public Museum that houses the 1928 Spillman Carousel, as well as the restoration of the carousel figures. The Cook Foundation has also supported JA Biztown, the Grand Rapids Art Museum, Hand2Hand, and the John Ball Zoo, to name a few.
