Native American - Northeast and Southeast Woodland ➔ Barbie Doll

Identifier:
2025.50.2
Description:

This doll is manufactured with plastic and stands 11.5 inches tall. She has been customized with a ribbon skirt, jewelry, and a handmade basket, both items typical of the Anishinaabek in Michigan.  The basket was created by the artist using black ash strips. The ribbon skirt is cotton with polyester satin ribbons, and can be interpreted as a symbol of cultural pride. The jewelry style is a beaded necklace and earrings commonly seen in Indigenous communities.

The doll is encased in the plastic and cardboard box she was purchased, further reinforcing the message that this is the customization of a common toy.
