The photograph is autographed, "Your Truly, F.H. Hinman, Paymaster U.S.N,"   Lieutenant Commander Frank Henry Hinman was the assistant paymaster, and later paymaster, for the United States Navy during the US Civil War.  At some point, Hinman was on a USN ship sailing into South America ports.  The image was taken at the Bate & Ca. photographers in Montevideo, Uruguay, which also had studios at 137 Regent Street, London, and, 67 Calle de O'Reilly, Habana, as noted on the reverse.  82.90.141.
