Description:
An early breech loader design that became famous for its use during the Civil war and after, the sharps rifles and carbines were much faster to load and operate than the standard rifle muskets of the day. The sharps rifles and carbines operated by a lever that when the user actuates the breech block drops down, allowing a cartridge to be inserted into the chamber. The sharps fire via a stepped pellet primer system and hammer mechanism. This particular carbine has been converted from a percussion cap firing mechanism to having an anvil for the firing pin when it was updated to fire metallic cartridges. Area near the breech on the receiver is marked "R.S. LAWRENCE PAT/APRIL 12th 1859". The receiver is marked "C. SHARPS PAT/OCT 5th 1852." The initials "F.Z.P." have been carved into the right side of the buttstock on this example.
