Description:
This steel grate decking was part of the Mackinac Bridge that suspends over the Straits of Mackinac, connecting the Upper and Lower Peninsulas of Michigan. It was removed from the bridge around 2022 due to corrosion.
The Mackinac Bridge, also called the Big Mac or Mighty Mac, was constructed in 1957 and is the longest suspension bridge in the Western Hemisphere (as of 2023). The Grand Rapids Public Museum's collection also includes the first vehicle to cross the bridge on November 1st, 1957.
