Description:
"A Pocket Guide to Vietnam" was issued by the Department of Defense to soldiers of the United States Army who were stationed in Vietnam during the Vietnam War. The 90-page booklet contains a history of Vietnam, information about Vietnamese culture, a language guide, and image guides to identify the uniforms of the Vietnamese armed forces. Numbers and letters across the top of the booklet read "DoD PG-215 / DA Pam 360-411 / NAVPERS 93135B / AFP 216-4 / NAVMC 2593B".  

This booklet is part of the Thomas DeYoung, Vietnam War Archival Collection #244 which contains booklets, maps, and other documents related to the Vietnam War and DeYoung's service in the United States Army.

Thomas J. DeYoung studied music at Aquinas College in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and later taught school in Wyoming, Michigan. During the Vietnam War, he did two tours with the United States Army and was awarded a Purple Heart before retiring as a major. From 1967 to 1968 he served in the Bravo Company (2nd Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division). He later became the rector of St. Adalbert's in Grand Rapids.
