Black History ➔ Face Mask

2020.145.4
Description:
This face mask has elastic ear bands and is made of white cotton fabric with the phrase "Black Lives Matter" along the top. It was created during the COVID-19 pandemic by local artist Reginald James in support of the Black Lives Matter movement following the murder of George Floyd by a Minneapolis police officer on May 25th, 2020. In response to Floyd's death, protests took place nationally and internationally in support of the movement, some of which resulted in riots. Because Floyd's death occurred during the COVID crisis, protesters were strongly encouraged to wear face masks when gathering, leading some individuals to create masks to support the cause.
