This parasol frame has a carved crook handle made of wood and a tassel hangs at the midpoint. The canopy is missing from this artifact however there are black silk remanents which suggest it was made of black silk. This parasol belonged to Mary Barby, grandmother of the donor.
Women often carried parasols to protect their complexion from the sun. A fair complexion was prized as a symbol of a life of leisure, showing that these women didn't have to work outside and could spend their days inside.
