Description:
This doll is part of a set of Japanese samurai dolls that were purchased during World War II by the donor's father-in-law Joe Stravers who served in the U.S. Navy on the USS Hoggatt Bay aircraft carrier that spent some time in the South Pacific. This doll, made of cork and plastic, is dressed in Japanese armor that is constructed of many metal plates strung together with yellow thread. The doll is modeling the modern style of armor that was designed to be lightweight but sturdy and movable for the many types of activities the samurai were involved in such as battles, riding horses, and swordsmanship. It also protects against the weather and was able to dry quickly when wet. The armor is similar to Grand Rapids Public Museum's collection accession # 81249 and serves as an educational model of how the armor appeared when worn.
