Vernon James Ehlers was born in Pipestone, Minnesota in 1934 and later moved to Grand Rapids.  Ehlers attended Calvin College and earned a Ph.D. in Nuclear Physics from the University of California, Berkeley.  He was the first research physicist to be elected to Congress.  Over the course of his career in politics, Ehlers served as a Kent County Commissioner, a Michigan State Representative, a Michigan State Senator, and the United States Representative for Michigan's 3rd district.
