Archival Collection #064 - Garrit Verburg consists of nine photographs and one business card pertaining to the immigration and employment of Garrit Verburg. These documents span the dates 1885 to 1930. This collection was donated by Lena Erickson, the daughter of Garrit Verburg.
Garrit Verburg, born in 1870 in the Netherlands, came to America in 1881 and settled in Grand Haven, Michigan. He moved to Grand Rapids at the age of twenty-two. Garrit worked in a number of furniture factories including ten years with the Fancy Furniture Company. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners and sat as secretary/treasurer during the 1911 furniture workers strike. Garrit was blacklisted for his participation in the strike and never worked in a furniture factory again. He worked as a business agent for the Carpenters Union District Council from 1911 to 1916. IN 1921 he went into banking. He remained active in the Grand Rapids Labor Temple Association as treasurer until his death in 1929.
