friends and fellow soldiers of Co. C
With the greatest pleasure I drop you a few lines to let you know that we are at last one mile beyond the city of Atlanta, the rebs had the strongest fortifications here that I have ever seen of their's. The place is very much injured from the effects of our shot and shell. We have been here four days fixing quarters & drilling some. Are to commence work tomorrow on the forts. The sight looks rather dark at present for supplies. No trains through from Nashville for more than a week. I think the Army will be hard pressed for supplies as they were last winter. Should our Army remain herefor the Rebs are bound to cut our road in the rear & cause much delay in transportation. The men are mostly well , I have 171 in all, recruits on hand to fill the Co. when the /61 men go out, which is now understood can't leave us until the 6th of December. So Charley you will have plenty of time to call round & see us once more. You will see by the enclosed petition my action in your behalf & the result I hope you may bare up under your afflictions with Christian fortitude & await the good time coming.
                                       I am very Respectfully your
