Calkins enlisted 9/26/1861 in Grand Rapids and receives a promotion to Sgt. Major 3/4/1862. He also receives promotions to 2nd Lt. and 1st Lt. leaving the regiment after his enlistment expiration 11/2/1864. He is pictured as a 2nd Lt. and served in the battles of Lavergne, Corinth, Perryville, and Atlanta.
