Description:
Blue corduroy coat and matching hat.;The Betsy Wetsy doll was originally made by the Ideal Toy Company of New York in 1935. It is said the doll was named for the daughter of Abraham Katz, the head of the company. The special feature of the doll was that after a "fluid" which was sold as "baby food," was poured into her open mouth the doll urinated. It was supposed to give girl's the feeling of having their own live baby to feed and care for. The doll was made in several sizes from 12 inches through 17 inches and in several styles with different types of hair. Betsy reached her popularity in the late 1950s and early 1960s. She was included in the annual Sears Christmas Wishbook that was delivered to almost every American household during the 1950s and 60s. The doll was so popular that several of the sewing pattern companies made patterns for clothing to fit the doll. Betsy Wetsy was named one of the top 100 toys of the century by the Toy Industry Association.;The clothing that was donated with the doll probably did not come with the doll when it was originally purchased. It most probably was made at home for the doll using a pattern made by one of the sewing pattern companies like Butterick or Simplicity.
