Description:
Presentation sword with Scabbard. Scabbard is steel with brass fittings. Sword blade is elaborately decorated. Sword hilt is brass and black leather wrapped with brass wire. a: sword; b:scabbard;This sword was owned by a member of Grand Rapids' Grand Army of the Republic Custer Post No. 5. It was also made in Grand Rapids by a local firm. The GAR and Grand Rapids' participation in it is significant. This organization of Civil War veterans wielded considerable political power. This sword may be used in future research or exhibitions about the Civil War, the GAR or fraternal organizations.;Etched on sword blade: "G.A.R." and "1861-1865" and "Custer Post No. 5" and "Wolcott Regalia Co., Grand Rapids, Mich". Cast on hilt, "GAR".;According to donor, this sword was removed from the Grand Rapids Armory when it closed.;Custer Post #5 of the Grand Army of the Republic was founded in Grand Rapids in 1869. This sword was owned by a member of Grand Rapids' Grand Army of the Republic Custer Post No. 5. It was also made in Grand Rapids by a local firm. The GAR and Grand Rapids' participation in it is significant. This organization of Civil War veterans wielded considerable political power.

Thank God for Michigan: Stories from the Civil War (June 6 2011 – March 29 2015)
Thank God for Michigan was an exhibition developed by the GRPM to commemorate the sesquicentennial of the Civil War.  The exhibit featured over 150 artifacts from the GRPM's collection and told the story of the Civil War through the lens of soldiers and civilians from Michigan.
