Description:
Piece of abalone carved into the shape of a shark. One side is mother of pearl.;Bora Bora, one of the Society Islands and now part of French Polynesia, was home to Operation Bobcat from 1942-1946, the code name for the U.S. military garrison sent there to serve as a supply base for local Allied operations. At its height over 6,000 military personnel were stationed there. All the pieces donated by Dr. Henry Fiebig (126019-126028) are good examples of the tourist trinkets that GIs stationed in the South Pacific often brought home after their tours of duty in World War II.;One of ten items from Bora Bora given to the PMGR by Dr. Henry Fiebig. The donor spent time there in 1943, while on duty in World War II.
