In 1944 he completed the Army Air Forces navigation school as a staff sergeant. He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in November 1944 and served through the end of World War II at the 328th Army Air Forces Base Unit at Gulfport, Mississippi. The United States Army Air Corps, also known as USAAC, was a service branch of the United States Army specializing in aerial warfare and was originally known as the United States Army Air Service. It was renamed on July 2nd, 1926. In 1942 it was abolished as an organization. The United States Army Air Corps continued to exist as a branch of the army until the National Security Act of 1947 caused it to disband.
