Identifier:
1991.59
Description:
Archival Collection #114 - George W. Mitchell contains photographs, letters and documents related to George Mitchell’s military service during World War II. The Museum collection also includes his U.S. Navy dress white jumper (acc #1991.59). George Mitchell served in the U.S. Navy on the U.S>S. Houston during the late 1930s and early 1940s. Insignia’s on Mitchell’s jumper indicates he was a first class gunner’s mate with an ordnance specialty. Mitchell became a Chief Petty Officer, the highest ranking an enlisted man can achieve, as seen by his dress uniform in one of the photographs. The hash marks visible on the right arm of his dress uniform (seen in the photograph) indicate he had served in military at least for sixteen years of service. The donor of this collection was the cousin of George W. Mitchell, Sue Van Maastricht.
